Canada Implements Travel Ban on Seven African Nations

As of November 26, 2021, Canada has banned the entry of foreign nationals who have travelled to one of seven different countries in Southern Africa in the last 14 days including: Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini and Lesotho, in response to concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant. At this time, the ban also applies to foreign nationals holding temporary Canadian status, including work permit holders. Travelers who have recently arrived in Canada from any of the designated countries, regardless of vaccination status, are required to immediately quarantine for 14 days, take a mandatory COVID-19 test, and remain in quarantine until a negative test result is received.

Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents entering Canada from the designated countries within the last 14 days prior to entry are permitted entry as of right, but will be subject to enhanced screening and quarantine measures, regardless of vaccination status. These travelers will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 molecular test in a third country before entering Canada. Upon arrival in Canada via air, they will be subject to immediate arrival testing and will be required to stay at a government approved hotel until a negative test result is received. Travelers will further be required to complete a COVID molecular test on day 8 following arrival and quarantine for 14 days.
