DHS Places Limitations on ESTA Program for Hungary

As of August 1, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reduced the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) travel authorization validity period for travel to the United States by Hungarian citizens and nationals under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) to one year. The DHS is also limiting the validity of an ESTA for Hungarian citizens and nationals to single use. These two new changes will apply to any ESTA applications received after August 1, 2023.

Normally, travel authorization issued under ESTA is valid for multiple entries and for a period of two years from the date of issuance. However, due to the Government of Hungary’s inability to satisfy several VWP requirements, the DHS found it necessary to reduce the validity and usage of the ESTA travel authorization for Hungarian nationals and citizens. The DHS will continue to monitor Hungary’s non-compliance with VWP requirements and may make further adjustments to Hungary’s VWP designation, including suspension or termination from the program, if it becomes necessary.
