USCIS Releases Revised Form I-9 for Employment Eligibility Verification
On July 17, 2017, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) released a revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Employers must use the revised Form I-9 with the edition date of 07/17/17 beginning September 18, 2017. As this date is fast approaching, we encourage employers to begin using the revised Form I-9 for all new hires. Revisions to the Form I-9 affect the List of Acceptable Documents to establish work authorization. Under List C, USCIS added the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240) to the list of acceptable documents establishing employment authorization. All certifications of report of birth issued by the Department of State including Certification of Birth Abroad (Form FS-545), Certification of Report of Birth (Form DS-1350) and the newly added Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240) are now consolidated under item #2 on List C. The Handbook for Employers Guide (M-274) has been revised to reflect these changes, and has been converted from PDF format to a more user-friendly, web platform.
